Gżira, is established between Msida and Sliema, touching Ta’ Xbiex at a point, is a town named after an island (Gżira translates into 'island') that is found directly opposite the Grand Harbour and Manoel Island. Gżira is an old town mostly developed as a working class village that grew out of the need for housing for the numerous workers who were employed in and around the port. Since it was quite centrally located, and located by the sea, Gżira effectively became an extension of the affluent town of Sliema, enjoying views of the capital city Valletta across the harbour. Being close to Valletta (15 minutes by ferry) and the University of Malta, and being of interest to various local and foreign businesses, it is home to a vibrant and continuously modernized community.
